Top Five Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Can we install HardiFlex®3.5mm Fiber Cement Board with the same nailing pattern as plywood?

No. HardiFlex
®3.5mm Fiber Cement Board should be installed with nails 50mm from the corner to avoid break- out of the corners. Nails must be 12mm from the edge and 200mm (8”) on centers across the body of the sheet and along supporting edges.

2. Is it alright to cut HardiFlex®3.5mm Fiber Cement Board with a handsaw?

No. Use HardiFlex
® Scoring Knife for cutting HardiFlex®3.5mm Fiber Cement Board. A handsaw will become blunt after cutting through any James Hardie Fiber Cement Product. Other alternatives would be to use a power saw or a hand guillotine.

3. Can I use finishing nails to install HardiFlex® Sheets?

No. Finishing nails do not have a head to hold the HardiFlex® Sheets in place.

4. What are the specifications of the HardiFlex® Nail recommended for HardiFlex® Fiber Cement Board?

Nails must be corrosion protected with an acceptable thickness of zinc coating or galvanization with a head diameter not smaller than 6mm, shaft length of 32mm and shaft diameter of 2.3mm.

5. What are the types of paints that can be used for HardiFlex® Fiber Cement Board?

The most economical type of paint recommended for HardiFlex® Fiber Cement Boards are water-based (latex) paints. Acrylic, Vinyl, PVA, are all water-based paints. Acrylic can be used for both external and internal applications. Vinyl and PVA are for internal applications. Oil-based (Alkyds or Enamel) paints can also be used on HardiFlex® Fiber Cement Boards, although they would cost more than water-based. These types of paint also need undercoats because these paints soak in too far.
